Apologies for any inconvenience.

New Year’s Newsletter

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

Hello and happy New Year!

Welcome to the bumper newsletter of 2011/12, I hope everyone enjoyed their break over Christmas, there’s not been any snow to play in this year, but hopefully you’ve all found other activities to keep your motors employed!

Our apologies that this hasn’t reached you before now, but we’ve had a bit of a time juggling dates with venues and land owners, so we haven’t been able to set the calendar until recently!
Nevertheless here it is, containing all the materials you’ll need for 2012, including a membership renewal form, booking forms for a few of the non-competitive events in the year, plus another calendar featuring some of the images we collected over the last 12 months!

We’ve had a great year as a club, as those of you who were able to attend the AGM will have heard in more detail. We’ve seen consistently good numbers at events, both from within the club and from other clubs as we ran our first ‘open’ event at Catlow Fold this year, with other club members doubling the entries!
We’re looking to do more with other clubs in 2012, including attending more Interclub events, such as the Major’s Memorial and the war of the Roses, as well as running more of our own open events.

As you’ll see from leafing through the calendar, we’ve got a very active schedule for the coming year. We’re keen to keep the success of this year going and provide more opportunities for people to get involved, so for 2012 we’ve planned RTV trials, CCV trials and a club meal, plus a navigational scatter and much more!
We’ve seen more of you than ever coming to the social and camping events this year, so we’ve added to these in the New Year, as well as re-instating our annual holiday rally.

So, lots of reasons to be excited about this year and just as many reasons to fill in the attached renewal form and send it back to us so we can keep planning events!
I’d like to take the opportunity to remind everyone that the committee meets on the first Monday of every month at Dyneley Arms on Poole Bank (LS21 1ET) and everyone is invited to join us from 8.30pm for a beer and a chat, so if there’s something you want to see the club doing or you’ve got some ideas, come along and let us know!

Anyway, onto this year’s events as planned out in the calendar. You’ll find a number of booking forms enclosed in this pack for the non-competitive events of the year:

First is the club meal, booked for the 4th of Feb. After the success of last year, we’re keeping this at the Rawdon Conservative Club and continuing the buffet meal, although we’re taking the catering in-house. This mean that the meal will be FREE (yes, really) to club members, with non-members charged at £9 each.
The venue is limited to a capacity of 60, so bookings are being taken on a first come, first served basis! In addition, can the lucky few of you awarded trophies last year please return them to us in January, contact any member of the committee to make arrangements.

You’ll also find a form for the navigational scatter (March 4th). For those of you who haven’t done one before, a nav scatter works a bit like a treasure hunt! Your aim is accumulate as many points as possible by visiting various locations scattered over the map in the time allowed.
It’s a good bit of fun for all and finishes at the Royal Oak at Dacre Banks for a meal and a chat. With this in mind, please return the booking forms in good time as we’ll need to know total numbers in advance.

Finally, there is a form enclosed for the Holiday Rally (3-12th) August. This takes place in Machynleth in mid Wales, a location that the club has used in the past.
The area is great for green lanes and general tourist activities, plus being only half an hour’s drive to the coast.
We’re gauging interest in order to confirm the booking, so if you’d like to attend can you return your forms to us by the end of January. If we’ve got enough interest, we’ll then confirm the booking and let you know at the club meal and the next newsletter! Hopefully, this can go back to being a permanent fixture in the club calendar as of this year!

In other news, there are changes to report on the committee, following the AGM in November, and it is now made up as follows:

Chairman: Hedley Cope
Vice Chairman: Gary Docherty
Secretary: Andy Summers
Treasurer: Neil Benson
Events Officer: Tom Benson
Membership Sec: Neil Benson
Editor/Webmaster: Barney Netherwood
Equipment Officer: Harriet Summers
Chief Marshall: Sue Cope
Rally Officer: Kate Netherwood
Rights of Way Officer: Jon Ackroyd
Member without Portfolio: Andy Cope

We welcome the new committee members and thanks those who are stepping down for their time and efforts over the years that they’ve helped run the club.

Finally, as a bit of light relief, I’d like to include an email from a resident of Bishopdale, who’s stranded Ford focus was rescued from halfway down a green lane by a few of our members on new year’s day.

Hello,

I would be most obliged if you could pass on my thanks to the members of YLROC who were out and about up Bishopdale yesterday (particularly to Kate and Andy). I would imagine they were quite surprised to come across a Ford Focus descending the lane from Kidstones.

What can I say other than I’m an idiot, I should know better as I spend a lot of time on the hills in the area as I live in Bishopdale! Had it not been for the extremely helpful members of the club the situation would have undoubtedly become worse than it already was.

I’ve read that you have a fighting fund, how would I go about making a donation?

Many thanks

Serves as a reminder that the code we follow on green lanes extends no only to the land, but the other users, well equipped or otherwise! Well done to Andy Cope and Kate Netherwood for representing the club!

I think that covers everything for now, keep your eyes on the website for any updates and we’ll be back with another newsletter in March!

It just remains for me to pass on our hopes that you enjoyed Christmas, our wishes for a happy new year, and of course, happy Land Rovering!

Peak District Green Lane Repairs

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

The Peak District Vehicle User Group (PDVUG), is looking into repairing some of their Green Lanes and we have been asked if we would like to volunteer a work party to help out.

From a PDVUG official:
“The suggestion is to use some of the money granted for the Black Harry Trails project Click here to fill some of the many pot holes at the top of Black Harry Lane.
We would of course provide materials and supervision – we just need willing helpers to shift about 40 tonnes of limestone aggregate which will be delivered to the wide area at the top of the lane, into the pot holes/puddles.
If we have material spare we may use it on the slope down towards Black Harry Gate, which is becoming a bit worn.
The work will probably only take a couple of days – depending on volunteer numbers of course – and we can offer a choice of either weekends 19th/20th or 26th/27th February.”

Obviously this is a good opportunity to keep another green lane open and save it from a TRO! Anybody interested should contact Jon Ackroyd or the webmaster at bnetherwood@primegroup.co.uk
Details of the lane are below:

December’s Newsletter

Sunday, December 19th, 2010

Dear all,

Hello and welcome to the last newsletter of this year!

You’ll have noticed that this is a bumper edition, containing all the materials you’ll need for 2011, including a membership renewal form, booking forms for the non-competitive events in the first quarter, plus a competitive events calendar featuring some of the images we collected over the last 12 months!

As you’ll see from leafing through this, we’ve got a very active schedule for the coming year. The last year has seen a steady rise in numbers to events across the board. The last few trials of this year have been very well received, despite some inclement weather! The new land at Catlow Fold has turned out to be excellent, pictures and the scores from this and the Briercliffe event are available on the website. We’re keen to keep the success of this year going and provide more opportunities for people to get involved, so for 2011 we’ve planned 10 RTV trials, 3 CCV trials and numerous camping weekends, plus we’re enjoying an increasing presence at the National and interclub events!

There are more changes to report as well. Following the AGM on the 18th of November, the committee has a number of new members and is now made up as follows:

Chairman: Jon Ackroyd
Vice Chairman: Gary Docherty
Secretary: Andy Summers
Treasurer: Neil Benson
Events Officer: Tom Benson
Membership Sec: Neil Benson
Editor/Webmaster: Barney Netherwood
Equipment Officer: Harriet Summers
Chief Marshall: Andrew Cope
Rally Officer: Jackie Scaife
ALRC Rep: Dave Carter
Rights of Way Officer: Jon Ackroyd

You will notice the absence of some long standing names on this list. Sarah Ackroyd and Mick Moses have both chosen to step down, following long years of service to the club, and our thanks go out to you for your time and dedication. Mick will continue to correlate trial results and run the league tables, if you want to see this year’s you can find them on the website under the results tab.

The committee now meets at the Dyneley Arms on the first Monday of each month from 7.30-8.30pm. We’ve decided to open this up into a club evening after the meeting, so we encourage you all to attend the evening for a drink and a chat! The address for the pub is:

The Dyneley Arms
Otley Road,
Otley,
North Yorkshire
LS21 1ET

On to the up and coming events of 2011! Traditionally, we don’t run competitive events in January and February to avoid the bad weather, using this time to book various social events, and this year is no exception.

First is the New Year’s green laning run. Last year’s run through Nidderdale was a great success and we’ve decided to do another run, this time to Derbyshire, where there are numerous good lanes to explore.
You’ll find a booking form in this pack which you can return to the events secretary if you want to take part. We’ll be meeting in the car park of the southbound Woolley Edge services, (M1 between Junctions 39 and 38) at 8.30am on New Year’s Day.
Due to the number of guides available, we are limiting this to the first 10 vehicles to book, and given the difficulty of finding a pub open on new year’s, a packed lunch will be necessary!

Secondly is the road run in February. Last year this went to the Commercial vehicles Museum in Leyland and attracted a strong turn out. Maintaining the theme into 2011, we’ve booked to go to the Heritage Motor Museum at Gaydon, on February the 6th. This is ‘home to the world’s greatest collection of British cars’ and features numerous exhibits and features from the 1890’s to the modern day, including the Land Rover Legacy Project, which tells the story of the Lode Lane factory, its people and products. (find more information at www.heritage-motor-centre.co.uk).

As this is a bit further away than the previous year, we’ve elected to book a coach to take us there and back. We will be meeting in Yeadon at 8.00pm for this, please see the attached booking form for details. The cost for this is £20.00 each for adults, £14.00 each for children under 14, and £7.00 each for under 5’s. This covers the coach trip there and back, entry to the museum and a guided tour. Other activities can be undertaken and paid for on the day, please see the museum’s site for details.
There is a café at the museum, but no group lunch arrangements have been made.
Again, if you want to take part in this, please return the booking form and a covering cheque to the events secretary (details on the form). Please note that we are limited to 42 seats on the coach, so bookings are taken on a first come, first serve basis.

Finally, you will find a booking form for the club meal, to be held on February the 19th. Last year we ran this at the Dyneley Arms and it was a great success, with a record turnout. Given the numbers involved and in trying to keep everyone in one room, we’ve arranged this year’s event to be held at the Rawdon Conservative Club, with a buffet dinner. The Club is very attractive, warm and welcoming as it has recently been fully renovated. We have booked the main lounge to give us plenty of space, plus our own bar, serving a good range of beers! Details can be found on the attached booking form, or at http://rawdonconservativeclub.com.
Costs for the dinner are £10.00 per head, with a £5.00 subsidy for club members. You are free to bring 2 non Club guests per full member, paid at full price. If you wish to attend please return the booking form and a covering cheque to the events secretary (details on the form), before the 31st of January.
Please be at the Club for 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start.

I think that covers everything for now, keep your eyes on the website for any updates and we’ll be back with another newsletter in March!

It just remains for me to wish everyone a merry Christmas, a great new year, and of course, happy Land Rovering.

Barney Netherwood
