December’s Newsletter

Sunday, December 19th, 2010

Dear all,

Hello and welcome to the last newsletter of this year!

You’ll have noticed that this is a bumper edition, containing all the materials you’ll need for 2011, including a membership renewal form, booking forms for the non-competitive events in the first quarter, plus a competitive events calendar featuring some of the images we collected over the last 12 months!

As you’ll see from leafing through this, we’ve got a very active schedule for the coming year. The last year has seen a steady rise in numbers to events across the board. The last few trials of this year have been very well received, despite some inclement weather! The new land at Catlow Fold has turned out to be excellent, pictures and the scores from this and the Briercliffe event are available on the website. We’re keen to keep the success of this year going and provide more opportunities for people to get involved, so for 2011 we’ve planned 10 RTV trials, 3 CCV trials and numerous camping weekends, plus we’re enjoying an increasing presence at the National and interclub events!

There are more changes to report as well. Following the AGM on the 18th of November, the committee has a number of new members and is now made up as follows:

Chairman: Jon Ackroyd
Vice Chairman: Gary Docherty
Secretary: Andy Summers
Treasurer: Neil Benson
Events Officer: Tom Benson
Membership Sec: Neil Benson
Editor/Webmaster: Barney Netherwood
Equipment Officer: Harriet Summers
Chief Marshall: Andrew Cope
Rally Officer: Jackie Scaife
ALRC Rep: Dave Carter
Rights of Way Officer: Jon Ackroyd

You will notice the absence of some long standing names on this list. Sarah Ackroyd and Mick Moses have both chosen to step down, following long years of service to the club, and our thanks go out to you for your time and dedication. Mick will continue to correlate trial results and run the league tables, if you want to see this year’s you can find them on the website under the results tab.

The committee now meets at the Dyneley Arms on the first Monday of each month from 7.30-8.30pm. We’ve decided to open this up into a club evening after the meeting, so we encourage you all to attend the evening for a drink and a chat! The address for the pub is:

The Dyneley Arms
Otley Road,
Otley,
North Yorkshire
LS21 1ET

On to the up and coming events of 2011! Traditionally, we don’t run competitive events in January and February to avoid the bad weather, using this time to book various social events, and this year is no exception.

First is the New Year’s green laning run. Last year’s run through Nidderdale was a great success and we’ve decided to do another run, this time to Derbyshire, where there are numerous good lanes to explore.
You’ll find a booking form in this pack which you can return to the events secretary if you want to take part. We’ll be meeting in the car park of the southbound Woolley Edge services, (M1 between Junctions 39 and 38) at 8.30am on New Year’s Day.
Due to the number of guides available, we are limiting this to the first 10 vehicles to book, and given the difficulty of finding a pub open on new year’s, a packed lunch will be necessary!

Secondly is the road run in February. Last year this went to the Commercial vehicles Museum in Leyland and attracted a strong turn out. Maintaining the theme into 2011, we’ve booked to go to the Heritage Motor Museum at Gaydon, on February the 6th. This is ‘home to the world’s greatest collection of British cars’ and features numerous exhibits and features from the 1890’s to the modern day, including the Land Rover Legacy Project, which tells the story of the Lode Lane factory, its people and products. (find more information at www.heritage-motor-centre.co.uk).

As this is a bit further away than the previous year, we’ve elected to book a coach to take us there and back. We will be meeting in Yeadon at 8.00pm for this, please see the attached booking form for details. The cost for this is £20.00 each for adults, £14.00 each for children under 14, and £7.00 each for under 5’s. This covers the coach trip there and back, entry to the museum and a guided tour. Other activities can be undertaken and paid for on the day, please see the museum’s site for details.
There is a café at the museum, but no group lunch arrangements have been made.
Again, if you want to take part in this, please return the booking form and a covering cheque to the events secretary (details on the form). Please note that we are limited to 42 seats on the coach, so bookings are taken on a first come, first serve basis.

Finally, you will find a booking form for the club meal, to be held on February the 19th. Last year we ran this at the Dyneley Arms and it was a great success, with a record turnout. Given the numbers involved and in trying to keep everyone in one room, we’ve arranged this year’s event to be held at the Rawdon Conservative Club, with a buffet dinner. The Club is very attractive, warm and welcoming as it has recently been fully renovated. We have booked the main lounge to give us plenty of space, plus our own bar, serving a good range of beers! Details can be found on the attached booking form, or at http://rawdonconservativeclub.com.
Costs for the dinner are £10.00 per head, with a £5.00 subsidy for club members. You are free to bring 2 non Club guests per full member, paid at full price. If you wish to attend please return the booking form and a covering cheque to the events secretary (details on the form), before the 31st of January.
Please be at the Club for 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start.

I think that covers everything for now, keep your eyes on the website for any updates and we’ll be back with another newsletter in March!

It just remains for me to wish everyone a merry Christmas, a great new year, and of course, happy Land Rovering.

Greenlaning Survey

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

A local paper in the lakes has a poll on it’s front page saying:

Should off-road vehicles be allowed on green lanes in national parks?

I would be very much indebted if you could air your opinion with a click…..

Many Thanks!

Act now to save another green lane

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority is again seeking to close a Byway Open to all Traffic (BOAT) in the Dales. The Authority are consulting on a permanent Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) on Gorbeck Road, which runs from Langcliffe (SD830652) to Langscar Gate near Malham (SD880648).

The route was only confirmed as a BOAT in September 2006, and is one of the routes ‘saved’ through the High Court ruling in June 2009 against the Park Authority’s previous order. The route was subject to extensive repairs to BOAT standard in 2005/6 and is now a non-challenging but highly scenic chance to appreciate the Dales landscape.

You are encouraged to comment on the proposals, in writing to:

Mark Allum

Access Officer

Grassington

Or in writing to: mark.allum@yorkshiredales.org.uk by 30 May 2010

 More information is available at:

http://www.yorkshiredales.org.uk/index/looking_after/access_to_the_countryside/green_lane_management.htm

with the reasons for the order and a route assessment report.

It should be noted that individually drafted letters carry more weight than petitions or copied letters signed by different people.

We need to encourage as many objections as possible, and you should refer to the assessment report.

  • It should be noted that the route is in very good repair other than very short stretches of shallow ruts which total 5% or less of the length of the route. These areas could easily be repaired to the same standard as the rest of the surface, a cheaper and more proportionate response to the scale of the issue.
  • Recreational use is acknowledged to be reducing across the Park and hence any perceived threat is diminishing.
  • The threat to natural beauty is hypothetical and based on vehicles straying from the route onto sensitive areas (for which there is no evidence) or increased use. Any right of way requires maintenance and this is no different. As a historical route it will have needed maintenance since its creation and cannot expect to survive without.
  • Agricultural use is expected to remain at levels of almost 50% of current 4×4 use. This vehicle presence will remain and the surface needs maintenance to accommodate this. As a historical route, wheeled and mixed users will always have been present so users must acknowledge this as part of the character of the route.
  • Its length and impact comprises a minute fraction of the total area and length of rights of way which do not have vehicle rights in the National Park.
  • The route is highly acclaimed meeting the National Park’s ‘natural beauty’ and ‘recreation’ tests, but these should be equally available to all users, without discrimination.
  • National Park Officers have recommended a seasonal order, but elected Members have acted unilaterally to promote a permanent order. Seasonal and flexible restrictions are used successfully in many parts of the country including National Parks, so why do the elected Members feel they know best and should act contrary to fact and reality.
  • The response proposed is disproportionate to the issue, is prejudicially weighted against motorised users who continue to be stigmatised by officers and members of the Park Authority.
  • The proposed TRO is contrary to Policies AS3 and AS4 of the Park’s adopted Integrated Access Strategy.
  • The proposed TRO is contrary to the proper management of the route by testing less adversarial measures and a proportionate response to the issue, as recommended by the Government in ‘Making the best of Byways’.

Please help oppose this continued loss of our rights and the prejudiced bias of the Park’s elected members. Write and object before 30 May 2010.

Important information ahead of the Nationals

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Around the May bank holiday weekend, VOSA are planning a campaign to stop, inspect, and maybe prosecute drivers towing trailers on the motorway routes into Devon and Cornwall. They’ll be checking all manner of things, including trailer tyres, brakes, lights, noseweights, and overall weights. Anyone planning on going would be well advised to read this document. VOSA also have a DVD called “Fit to Tow”. It is a humorous production presented by Carol Smillie (Land Rover were a partner in its production) and you can download and watch it here.

March Newsletter

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

We’re well into March now and the trialing season has started again in earnest. I’d like to extend my thanks to everyone who entered for the first event of the year earlier this month at Briercliffe.

The event was successful, with a good turnout and great weather. A few of us had some ‘first trial of the year’ technical problems, but were able to borrow some other vehicles and finished the trial without further issue!

The beginning of the year has also seen us running a couple of social events, including the road run to Leyland Commercial Vehicles Museum and the annual club dinner. The attendance to these events has been brilliant, with no less that 43 people turning up to the club dinner! As part of the club’s continuing success we have revived the trophies again this year, and the following ones were given out on the club night:

Curtis Shield – awarded by the Editor for contributions to The Yorkie: Geoff Hirst

Goodall Caravans Trophy – awarded to Club member placed overall highest in the RTV trial at the ALRC National: Tom Benson

Harland Beever Trophy – awarded to the Club member placed iverall highest in the CCV trial at the ALRC National: Dave Walker

Milton Sunderland Award – awarded to the overall winner of the RTV league for 2009: Andy Summers

Chairman’s Award – awarded to an individual who has promoted the activities of the Club: Mick Moses for his commitment to producing The Yorkie and keeping members involved.

Our thanks go out to everyone who has contributed to making these events a success.

With regards to up and coming events, there have been a few changes to the calendar (calendar will be fully updated on this site shortly), mostly due to double bookings and losing sites. Please be aware that the schedule now reads as follows:

April 11th – Outlane (RTV Please note change of date!)

May 1st – 3rd – CrossHills (CCV Saturday @1pm, RTV Sunday @10.30am)

June 13th – Helmsley (RTV and Caravanning weekend)

July TBA – TBA (site lost)

Aug 28th – 30th – Eckington (P&D LRC Event, CCV Saturday, RTV Sunday)

Sept 18th – 19th – Helmsley (RTV and caravan weekend, includes night trial)

Oct 3rd – Briercliffe (RTV)

Nov 7th – Catflow Fold (RTV)

Please note the three day Cross Hills event at the beginning of May. Our first run of this event last year was really well received and it would be good to see a strong turnout again this year. The event works as a good test of minds and motors before the national, or just a good days trialing if you don’t fancy going all the way south this year!

Camping facilities are in place for the whole weekend, so feel free to come along and stay even if you’re not competing.

If you have any questions on these events or sites, please contact the events secretary (Tom) on 0113 3910597.

Any further changes will be displayed here, the new club website! Yes, it’s been a long time coming, but the site is now fully live and will be updated regularly so please keep checking back.

The new site will be accessible here at www.ylroc.com.

We welcome any feedback you might have on the site, details for the committee members will be accessible on the ‘Contact’ area of the site should you have any thoughts.

That’s it for now, I look forward to seeing you at the up and coming events!

Best regards

Team Vermont
